The Global Mental Health (GMH) at Mailman Program is a cross-departmental, interdisciplinary program at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The program is guided by the principles of health equity and decoloniality to inform our work in research, education, policy analysis, and advocacy. Collaborative, culturally contextualized research is important to validly diagnose, effectively treat and prevent mental distress, and develop mental health systems of care that address the treatment gap and limited availability of providers and/or services. Our mission is to create a community of scholars and partner institutions that contribute to the knowledge base and understanding of the determinants of mental health and to develop, evaluate and build capacity to deliver sustainable, locally-embedded, and culturally sensitive prevention and mental health programs in under-resourced settings.
