Hammer Health Sciences

Located on the Medical Center campus in the Hammer Building (corner of 168th Street and Fort Washington), the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library (one of the 25 libraries of Columbia University and its affiliated institutions) provides students at the Mailman School with an extraordinary array of resources.

From the Health Sciences Library's website, students can obtain information about the library's collections, services, classes, and more. Students may access the library's electronic resources (books, journals, databases, and more) both on and off campus by following links from the library's homepage and by inputting their Columbia University ID (UNI) and password whenever prompted.

For more information, see the library's Contact Us page.

The HSL’s Archives & Special Collections

The HSL collects, organizes and makes available unique and rare materials documenting the history of the health sciences. These include records of the University’s four health science schools; records of Presbyterian Hospital, the predecessor to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, including late 19th and early 20th century patient records; records of prominent health care and policy organizations such as the Visiting Nurse Service of NY and the Maternity Center Association; and papers of over 100 individuals who had prominent careers in the biomedical sciences. In addition, the department is the repository for the University’s rare book collection in the history of the health sciences, holding approximately 27,000 books dating from 1476 to 1922 and all journal titles before 1876.

In addition to using the libraries of Columbia University and its affiliates (including Barnard College, Teachers College, Union Theological Seminary, and the Jewish Theological Seminary), students at the Mailman School may also wish to take advantage of other great New York City area libraries.

The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library's website includes information on the many Branch and Research Division Libraries of the New York Public Library system. Students can register for an NYPL Access Card to take advantage of selected services (eg. Branch libraries circulate materials to those who sign up for a borrower's card). There is a Columbia Branch of NYPL on Broadway at 113th Street.

The New York Academy of Medicine Library

The New York Academy of Medicine Library supports the information needs of the divisions and centers of research dedicated to the Academy's commitment to enhance the health of the public. Since the early 1950's the Academy Library has been the only public medical library in the New York City area and as such has become an integral part of health information services to that community.

The Public Health Library of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

The Public Health Library of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides access to published health-related information for health care service organizations and for the general public.
