R2 coordinates pre-submission expert external review and final style editing Research Support Services for Mailman PIs who submit grants via the Mailman School Spa office Please notify R2 at least 5 weeks prior to the grant submission deadline via our Support Services (on line Google) Submission Form and note that we request that drafts be available for external reviewers at least 4 weeks in advance of the deadline and 2 weeks in advance of the deadline for those who wish to use the editing services. Pam Factor-Litvak is also available to review both grants that utilize this service and those that are ineligible for it.

NIH just released new guidance on budgeting and costs in their NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy FAQs. A significant change SPA wishes to highlight: Personnel Effort: Per NIH’s Budget/Costs FAQ 6, “All costs for data management and sharing activities, including personnel costs, must be included in the single line item on the R&R Budget Form in section F. Other Direct Costs. This includes the salary and fringe benefits corresponding to the time it takes personnel to undertake data activities (e.g., formatting, curating, developing supporting documentation). Do not include personnel costs related to data management and sharing activities in section A. Senior/Key Person or section B. other Personnel. This provision specifies the requirement for recipients to disclose significant developments as soon as they become known. Applicants must be junior faculty (Instructors, Assistant Professors and Associate Research Scientists who have a confirmed plan for promotion to Instructor/Assistant Professor), who have already established or plan to establish an independent research group at Columbia University but who have not yet received NIH R01 funding or equivalent, or mid- and senior-level investigators who are seeking to apply novel GI- or liver-related applications to their current research programs. Populations underrepresented in the Extramural Scientific Workforce https://diversity.nih.gov/about-us/population-underrepresented) are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications from new or established basic-clinical teams are strongly encouraged (see budget section for further details).; Budget. $30,000 for the duration of one year. Funds can be used for salary support or research expenses, but not for purchasing equipment or travel. Applicants should submit a letter of intent (LOI) by September 15, 2023. The LOI needs to include: 1. A brief description of the proposed research (<250 words); 2. A statement of how the applicant meets the eligibility criteria (<150 words); 3. An NIH biosketch. The LOI should be emailed to Seetha Srinivasan (svs2113@cumc.columbia.edu). LOIs will be evaluated, and applicants notified if their LOI was selected to proceed to full applications. ; Final application format and deadline. Applications should adhere to a modified NIH format (0.5 inch margins, single spaced, Arial 11 font) with a Specific Aims page and a 4 page Research Plan consisting of Background & Significance, Innovation and Experimental Approach. The Research Plan needs to also contain a paragraph on CU-DLDRC core usage, which is required for all applications. Rigor and sex as a biological variable should be briefly addressed, and it is expected that the proposal will include a section on pitfalls and alternative approaches. The proposal should also contain a cover letter (1 page); an abstract (30 lines max, according to NIH standards); an NIH formatted biosketch of the PI; a Budget and Budget Justification section (recommended 1 page, max 2 pages); References (no limit); and a research facilities section. For research that includes vertebrate animals or human subjects, a Vertebrate Animals section or Human Subjects section needs to be included in the application according to NIH format, with IACUC or IRB approval date or pending date. Up to three letters of support may be included.; Applications should adhere to the following order: 1. Cover letter; 2. Abstract; 3. NIH Biosketch; 4. Specific Aims; 5. Research Plan including a dedicated paragraph on CU-DLDRC core usage; 6. Budget and Budget Justification; 7. Research Facilities; 8. Vertebrate Animals section (max 2 pages), if applicable; 9. M. The updated instructions for the R&R Budget Form state: Provide a brief summary of type and amount of scientific data to be preserved and shared and the name of the established repository (ies) where they will be preserved and shared. Indicate general cost categories such as curating data and developing supporting documentation, local data management activities, preserving and sharing data through established repositories, etc., including an amount for each category and a brief explanation. Specify in the justification if no costs will be incurred for Data Management and Sharing, if applicable.
