Climate and Health

Working Group 3

Climate and Health

Leader: Dr. Jeff Shaman

When and Where: Meets once or twice monthly on Zoom or in-person. Location may vary

The activities of the Climate and Health Working Group are centered in Mailman’s Climate and Health Program, one of the first programs in the U.S. dedicated to research and education at the nexus of climate and health. Dr. Shaman is the program Director and a world leader in climate, atmospheric science, and hydrology as determinants of infectious disease transmission and infectious disease forecasting. In 2016, Dr. Shaman and the dean’s office obtained Rockefeller Foundation funding to create, build and support a Global Coalition for Education in Climate and Health. The coalition, which includes 175 leading institutions in 28 countries, will not only share and integrate data but also develop curricula, methods, and educational tools to ensure that the health professionals of tomorrow are prepared to recognize and address the causes and health risks related to climate change.

Recent work includes studies of climate influences on viral infection, transmission and forecast (Shaman), resilience of NYC public housing residents to climate changes (Hernández, Shaman, Evans), relations between air pollution and climate (Jack, Chillrud, Kioumourtzoglou), energy research (Hernández), impact of climate change on labor supply (Neidell), and impact of climate change in low- and middle-income countries (Ahsan).
