CSRI Summer 2

CSRI alumni and current Columbia University degree-seeking or MSPH special non-degree students with permission, are invited to further their training through CSRI Summer 2. CSRI Summer 2 participants may choose their own courses.*

*Note that non-degree students may take up to 12 academic credits. For CSRI Boot Camp alums, the limit is 16 academic credits. This limit does not apply to students already in a degree program. Students in a degree program should obtain approval from their program directors to take these courses before registering. Columbia University students from schools other than MSPH must apply for cross-registration.

CSRI Summer 2 Courses for 2024

P8484 Introduction to Advanced Epidemiologic Methods (1.5 credits)

Dates: May 31 - June 28: Fridays from 9am - 12:30pm
Call number: TBA

Description:
This course is geared towards physician researchers to provide hands-on experience with statistical methods that go beyond the basics to enhance grant writing skills. Students who are actively developing grants are encouraged to use the course to develop their methods section and/or analyze preliminary data. Topics include sample size calculations, clustered data, interrupted time series analysis, multilevel modeling, and longitudinal data analysis techniques. The course will take place over six 3.5-hour sessions conducted on Zoom. Each session will begin with a lecture introducing the analysis methods covered which will be followed by a lab session in which students will use SAS to conduct exercises implementing the analytic techniques (datasets and example code will be provided). Lab sessions will include individual and breakout group work. Course assignments will include readings, labs (which will not be graded), short quizzes on the analysis methods, assignments and a final project in which students will develop an analytic plan, conduct a data analysis and present findings (students can use their own or a course-provided dataset). Each student must have a full-version of SAS installed (SAS University and SAS OnDemand will not be sufficient for this course) and SAS experience is strongly preferred.

Prerequisites: Solid foundational knowledge of Epidemiology and Biostatatistics; while lectures will typically include a review of concepts, students will get more out of the course if they are already familiar with topics covered in foundational Epi and Biostats including but not limited to: confounding, bias, linear and logistic regression.

P8545 Applied Analysis of Complex Survey Data (1.5 credits)

Canceled for Summer 2024

Description:
This course will provide participants with practical skills to analyze data arising from complex epidemiologic sampling designs. Complex survey data violate typical assumptions about simple random samples of independent observations, thus requiring specialized statistical techniques. Multiple datasets, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent and Adult Health (AddHealth) data will be used for applied demonstrations, illustrating concepts applicable to all data sets arising from complex survey designs. The course will demonstrate the appropriate use of sampling weights and how the appropriate weight is specific to the research question being asked. Over the four class sessions, students will learn how to obtain basic descriptive statistics, appropriate variance estimates, regression parameters, and survival analysis output in SAS SURVEY procedures and also be introduced to advanced topics such as multiple imputation and new analytic techniques for big data. Students must have taken Introduction to Biostatistical Methods (or Quantitative Foundations) and have familiarity with a statistical software program, such as SAS, Stata, and/or SPSS. SAS experience is strongly preferred since the course will be taught with SAS. Each student is required to use a laptop or desktop with SAS installed during class.

Prerequisites: an introductory Biostatistics course (or Quantitative Foundations)

How to enroll:

Please be sure to read course descriptions, requirements and pre-requisites before registering or requesting registration.

** The enrollment priority form is not required for current degree-seeking students or for special non-degree students. However, in the case that the course reaches the enrollment cap, priority will be given in order of enrollment priority form submission.

Courses and dates are subject to change or cancellation depending on enrollment. Tuition is $2,096 per credit and does not include mandatory Columbia University student fees.
