The demand for primary care services in the U.S. is increasing exponentially, and the nurse practitioner (NP) workforce, expected to double between 2008 and 2025, can help meet the demand. However, many policy and practice barriers affect the optimal utilization of NPs in primary care practice. My team and I utilize qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies to produce evidence how to remove barriers for NP practice to ensure patients have access to timely, high quality, primary care. Our work has been funded by NIH (R01 MD011514), AHRQ (R01 HS025937), and several foundations.
