Biography

Judith E. Jones is Clinical Professor Emeritus at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University and Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Program Office for Free To Grow: Head Start Partnerships to Promote Substance-free Communities. She served as Senior Advisor to Carnegie Corporation for the Starting Points State and Community Partnerships for Young Children grants program. Professor Jones is the founding director of the National Center for Children in Poverty established in 1989 at Columbia University, with major support provided by the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. She previously served as Deputy Director of the Center for Population and Family Health, where she developed and managed a broad range of innovative programs using community resources and preventive health strategies to provide access to needed health care for underserved low-income women, adolescents, and young children. Professor Jones has appeared in the media, as an expert witness before Congressional committees, and as keynoter and presenter at numerous professional and foundation meetings. Professor Jones serves on numerous Boards and advisory committees focused on improving the well being of families and young children. She has also served as a consultant to private and governmental organizations in the United States, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and in Europe.

Select Urban Health Activities

Center for Population and Family Health: Professor Jones served as Deputy Director of the Center for Population and Family Health. There she developed and managed a broad range of innovative programs utilizing community resources and preventive health strategies to provide access to needed health care for underserved low-income women, adolescents, and young children. These included the implementation of comprehensive school-based clinics and interventions to streamline the Medicaid process so as to increase early receipt of prenatal care by low-income women.
