Teaching Assistants

Overview of Role

The role of the Teaching Assistant is to provide academic and administrative support for faculty. Additionally, teaching assistants act as a liaison between students and faculty to address logistical student concerns, or meet individually with students to discuss a challenging topic. At the Mailman School of Public Health, teaching assistants do not directly teach any course content but may be responsible for leading discussions, review sessions, or labs.

Being a teaching assistant at the Mailman School of Public Health provides students with the fantastic opportunity to work closely with our renowned faculty, while honing their management, communication, and teaching skills in a public health setting.  

what is the Difference between a "teaching assistant" and "Lead Teaching assistant"?
 

  • Teaching Assistant - resonsible for reporting to the Studio Lead Teaching Assistants. A Teaching Assistant will support the studio’s educational goals by fulfilling a range of educational and logistical responsibilities.
     
  • Lead Teaching Assistant - resonsible for reporting to the Studio Lead Faculty Member and the OEP Core Lead. A Lead Teaching Assistant will manage the studio’s teaching assistants and provide administrative support to faculty as well as educational support to students.

Programs Teaching ASSISTANTs Can Work For:

For each of the six studios, we also hire two lead teaching assistants whose primary responsibility is to supervise the studio’s regular teaching assistants.

Integrated Science and Practice (ISP)

We hire one lead teaching assistant to work closely with the faculty lead for Integrated Science and Practice and supervise all ISP section teaching assistants. All 20 sections of ISP have a teaching assistant and a faculty member who facilitate each session.

Leadership

Like ISP, we hire one lead teaching assistant to work closely with the faculty lead for Leadership and supervise all ten Leadership teaching assistants. All ten sections of Leadership have a teaching assistant and a faculty member who facilitate each session.
