Former Columbia SRP Trainee Rajib Mozumder, PhD leads a new publication, Origin of groundwater arsenic in a rural Pleistocene aquifer in Bangladesh depressurized by distal municipal pumping, that uses isotopic tracers and flow modeling to assess the vulnerablilty to low-arsenic aquifers perturbed by distant pumping.
Steve Chillrud, PhD and Stuart Braman, PhD attended the Safe Water for Community Health (Safe WATCH) Program. Dr. Chillrud gave a presentation titled: Strategies for promotion of private well testing for arsenic using health care system messengers.
New York State has announced that they have accepted the New York State Drinking Water Quality Council recommendations and are proposing new state MCL’s for three unregulated contaminants in drinking water: 1,4-dioxane, PFOS and PFOA . Alexander van Geen, PhD leads a report in Environ Sci Technol: Effectiveness of Different Approaches to Arsenic Mitigation over 18 Years in Araihazar, Bangladesh: Implications for National Policy. The article was highlighted in The Daily Star the leading English-language newspaper in Bangladesh.
Under the mentorship of Ana Navas-Acien, MD, PhD, Dr. Gernot Pichler a Visiting Scholar, published a paper in Circ Cardiovasc Imaging: Association of Arsenic Exposure With Cardiac Geometry and Left Ventricular Function in Young Adults. The article concluded that arsenic in drinking water damages the hearts of young adults and received media coverage from CNN, US News & World Report, Reuters and numerous other agencies.

Congratulations to Tiffany Sanchez, PhD, who was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health. Tiffany was a post-doctoral SRP trainee under Dr. Ana Navas-Acien and a graduate and undergraduate SRP trainee under Dr. Joseph Graziano.
Her proficiency in the metal analysis and interest in lung disease allows for multidisciplinary, translational research and sophisticated data analysis.
Trainee Franziska Landes, doctoral student in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Institute, had her work with high school students in Peru written up in the Columbia Earth Institute blog, State of the Planet.
