Biography

Leslie R. Andrews, Dr.PH is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. He established the original occupational hygiene teaching and research program within the Department in 1979. Since his appointment to the Adjunct Faculty in 1989, he has remained active in teaching, as an advisor for Doctoral students, and as a collaborator on research activities at Columbia. Dr. Andrews is an Occupational Hygienist by profession, with over forty years of experience in diverse occupational and industrial settings. By virtue of his training and experience, he is highly knowledgeable in the field of occupational exposure assessment. Over his long period of practice, he has assessed a wide array of occupations and their associated exposures to chemical and physical hazards, many of which no longer exist in the American economy. Dr. Andrews experience is of particular value in assessing historical exposures for epidemiological studies of diseases for which long latency may exist between suspect exposures and their effects. He is currently collaborating on several such studies at Columbia investigating neurological disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Peripheral Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), and has previously collaborated on a similar study of the neurological disorder Essential Tremor.
