March: Research Resources presented on March 25, 2021 (03/25/2021) a talk with Sheila M. Cherry, PhD, ELS, Founder, Fresh Eyes Editing, and Cofounder, CareerVolt, who discussed "Grant Writing Tips to Maximize Funding Success". Columbia Affiliates may access a handout of the talk via pw protected Sharepoint. Whether you've never submitted a grant application before, or you've been applying with mixed success, navigating the process of seeking research funding can be overwhelming and confusing. Not only does it take great ideas and an ability to execute them, but there is that somewhat mystifying question of how to present those plans in a way that resonates with grant reviewers. This information session covered key strategies for writing winning grants, including how to best meet reviewer's needs and expectations. During this session, Dr. Cherry discussed best practices for grant-writing and grant-strategizing to help you achieve your funding goals and catalyze your research. In addition, we talked about some of the most common mistakes that applicants make in their proposals. Review of this archival session will help you put the critical pieces in place to create a convincing application that gets reviewers and funders on your side. Dr. Cherry completed a Ph.D. in Genetics from Case Western Reserve University and postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Cherry launched Fresh Eyes Editing to support scientists in effectively communicating their research. In their first decade in operation, Fresh Eyes helped researchers in the US to win over $220 million in research funding. Dr. Cherry specializes in grant proposals for individual research programs and center/multi-project awards through consulting and editing, as well as providing workshops on grant writing, online writing intensives, and 1-on-1 training. In 2019 she partnered with long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Jessica Lerch, to start CareerVolt, a company providing scientists with coaching and support to refine their writing skills, conquer time and team management, and help them succeed in their careers. Fall 2017 Research Resources Information Sessions
September 2017: [1] Workshop on Developing Dissertation Grant Applications – The F31 and R36, 09/14/2017. Sponsored by Research Resources, and the Mailman School Doctoral Committee, this one session workshop moderated by Dr. Leslie Davidson, Professor of Epidemiology, is designed particularly for second and third year doctoral students planning to submit F31 or R36 applications to the NIH for dissertation training funding. The workshop provides an overview of application requirements and addresses elements important in developing a compelling application. It provides useful information, which will facilitate the work a student undertakes with his or her mentor to develop specific aims, a training program and the scientific narrative. Mentors are also welcome to attend. We will repeat the workshop in the Spring of 2018. Topics covered will include overview of the F31 and the R36s, developing specific aims, working with an NIH program officer, choosing a mentor, developing a training program and grantsmanship in making your application compelling.

The presentation reviews new NIH policies and forms related to human subjects, includes the new definition for Clinical Trials, a walkthrough of the new NIH application forms, the SIRB policy and what the process is at Columbia.
