Alumni Awards

Columbia Alumni Awards By Nina Rothschild, MPH‘92, DrPH'00

Would you like to honor a transformative leader in public health who just so happens to be a Mailman graduate or a more recent alum who is making remarkable strides in the field?  Please consider nominating such individuals for either the Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence or the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award.

At the alumni reunion in the Spring each year, the Mailman School of Public Health honors a remarkable alum with the Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence.  Established in 2009 and serving as a testament to the legacy of Dean Allan Rosenfield, the Award is given to a leader in the field of public health who is also making exceptional contributions to the Mailman School community.  Every year, the Award Committee—comprised of administration members and alumni—struggles to narrow the field and select a winner from many qualified graduates. Past winners include public health luminaries Sandro Galea, John MacPhee, Paul Brandt-Rauf and Sten Vermund.

Outstanding Recent Alumni Award, recognizing an amazing alum who has graduated within the last ten years. While many young alums are making important contributions to public health and are actively involved in the Mailman community, they don’t have the years of experience needed to be in the running for the Rosenfield Award. According to the Office of Career Services, recent grads have set themselves apart in myriad ways such as by going on to assume influential government positions, start businesses, or travel the world to help communities become healthier. They’re also coming back to the Mailman School to serve on panels, lead or assist research projects, attend networking events, and give career advice to current students.
