Email after Graduation

CUIMC IT will deactivate a student’s Exchange Account (i.e., the email ending in @cumc.columbia.edu) after a grace period following the conferral of one’s degree. The Columbia Mailman School of Public Health confers degrees only three times a year – in October, February, and May.

Graduating students should expect to receive three warning messages to their Exchange Accounts leading up to the deactivation of their Exchange Accounts. By following the instructions below, graduates may continue to use their @columbia.edu email alias.

In order to continue using the @columbia.edu address, students must complete the following:

  1. Forwarding to Columbia Alumni Association Email: The Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) provides alumni free, web-based email (powered by Gmail) ending in @caa.columbia.edu. Columbia offers email forwarding, allowing you to maintain an address of UNI@columbia.edu. You can forward your UNI@columbia.edu to your CAA email address by visiting the Manage My Uni page on the CUIT website. Information on Alumni emails can be found here. Email forwarding can only be set up after the Exchange accounts (@cumc.columbia.edu email) have been deactivated.
  2. Please note, as of October 22, 2019, it is no longer possible to set automatic forwarding from a uni@columbia.edu address to an external email account, such as Gmail or Yahoo.  On January 7, 2020, Columbia University removed any external forwarding from all @columbia.edu accounts. This change is a result of increasing anti-phishing measures by external partners whose mail systems restrict forwarded messages. For full details, please see the CUIT email forwarding page.

Graduates may also want to remember to switch any usernames, online accounts, or recovery emails to either their UNI@columbia.edu or personal email address (and removing their email ending in @cumc.columbia.edu).
