In 2003, the Mailman School launched
a building campaign to raise the funds necessary to house the majority of its programs under one roof. In an outpouring of support for the late Dr. Allan Rosenfield, then-Mailman School Dean, sufficient monies were raised to renovate 80 percent of the School’s building at 722 West 168th Street and to name it the Allan Rosenfield Building in tribute to him.
The goal of the renovation is to create an environment that fosters a sense of community, encourages the exchange of ideas, and reflects the Mailman School’s core values. The modern facilities and more efficient layout of faculty and staff offices, classrooms, laboratories, meeting spaces, and a state-of-the-art auditorium facilitate innovative learning opportunities, as well as stronger working relationships and interdisciplinary collaboration among students, faculty and staff.
Following are some example of spaces that have recently been upgraded, as well as a look towards future renovations and naming opportunities (detailed descriptions of spaces can be provided, upon request).
The focus of the Mailman School’s most recent renovation has been the transformation of the auditorium on the eighth floor. The auditorium is the most technologically advanced lecture hall on the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) campus and has the capability to broadcast internationally via podcast and teleconference. This state-of-the-art facility provides the School with a place where students, faculty, staff, and alumni can gather for special events, lectures, classes and school-wide assemblies, and allows the knowledge imparted to be shared with audiences around the world.
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences has made great strides towards the design of modern laboratory space, the first phase of which was completed in 2009. This space, on adjacent floors of the William Black Research Building and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Building at 650 and 630 West 168th Street, will improve the efficiency of existing laboratory infrastructure while fostering valuable collaboration with other lab-based programs throughout CUMC. Engineering and design plans for the project are underway. Completion of the overall project will create a first-rate facility that is crucial to sustaining the Department’s cutting-edge environmental health research initiatives.
Additional renovations planned for the Allan Rosenfield Building include reconstruction of the main floor in order to create a unique community space for faculty, students, staff, and alumni to come together to share ideas – an essential component of the next generation of public health education and discovery. The School currently lacks an area that can foster this critical communication; with this renovation, the entrance floor of the Allan Rosenfield Building will become a vibrant gathering place that will enhance the School’s educational environment.
