Generally, students are advised to complete the core curriculum as early as possible in their programs. However, some departments construct academic plans in which students complete them later in their programs. Please check with your department for further details.
BIOSTATISTICS PH P6103 (3 ) points, or PH P6104 (4) points, (Placement test required for P6104). [Before enrolling in P6103 or P6104, please be sure to check your own program requirements with your home department and advisor].
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES PH P6300, 3 points.
EPIDEMIOLOGY PH P6400, 3 points. It is recommended that Biostatistics be taken concurrently with, or previously to, this course.
HEALTH POLICY AND MANAGEMENT PH P6530, 3 points.
*SOCIOMEDICAL SCIENCES PH P6700, 3 points.
*The Department of Sociomedical Sciences has redesigned their core course (P6700 – Introduction to Sociomedical Sciences) to address all of the ASPH discipline-specific competencies for the social and behavioral sciences. These competencies provide the basis for the questions on the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) certification in public health exam (to learn more click here). Based on this redesign of both content and teaching methods, if you plan on taking the certification exam you are strongly encouraged to take this course. In general, the knowledge and skills obtained in this course are a core element of public health professional education. Students in Health Policy and Management, in particular the management track, have a curriculum that addresses these issues.
A select group of academic programs (see your handbook) offer the option to substitute P6503 (Introduction to Health Economics) or P6508 (Health Policy and the Political System) for P6700. [Please note that enrollment is limited in these HPM courses as the preferred method for meeting the SMS core course requirement is through enrollment in P6700 (see above)]. HDPFH students should review information here.
