The 2010 Mailman School Commencement day included an awards ceremony to recognize the stellar achievements of our students.
Before an overflow audience of family, friends, faculty, and students, the high-spirited program was kicked off with an introduction by Mailman School Executive Vice Dean, Andy Davidson. The awards presented included several school-wide honors as well as numerous awards and prizes for outstanding achievement within each of the School’s academic departments.
Awards
A description of each of the 2010 Student Awards and their recipient(s) follows:
THE JOHN AND KATHLEEN GORMAN PUBLIC HEALTH HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Given to students who have demonstrated excellence in commitment to the humane care of individuals and communities, and in advancing consideration of human rights and values in healthcare and prevention.
2010 Recipient: Carolina Marie Bravo
THE JOSEPH L. FLEISS MEMORIAL PRIZE IN BIOSTATISTICS
Awarded to a doctoral student whose outstanding dissertation advances statistical method and its applications to biomedicine and public health.
2010 Recipient: Shing M. Lee
THE JOHN VAN RYZIN MEMORIAL AWARD IN BIOSTATISTICS OR STATISTICS
Awarded for an outstanding dissertation in Biostatistics or Statistics.
2010 Recipient: Rositsa Borislavova Dimova
THE JOSEPH H. GRAZIANO AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES FOR THE MPH DEGREE
Given to a student in the Department for outstanding academic achievement and promise in the field of public health.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES FOR THE DRPH/PHD
Given to a student in the Department for outstanding academic achievement and promise in the field of public health.

THE ANNA C. GELMAN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
Awarded to students in the Department for high academic distinction and the potential for significant contributions to the field of public health.

THE SIDNEY KARK AWARD IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
Given to students in the Department who are committed to research in global health.

THE WILLIAM FARR AWARD IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
Given to students in the Department who have shown commitment to understanding or addressing the causes of social inequalities in health.

THE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GENERAL PUBLIC HEALTH
Presented to a graduating student for outstanding academic achievement.

THE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GLOBAL HEALTH
Presented to two Master of Public Health students and one doctoral student who have demonstrated academic excellence and the potential for future contributions in global health.

THE REGINA LOEWENSTEIN PRIZE FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN
HEALTH POLICY AND MANAGEMENT

Given to a student in the Sociomedical Sciences Department for either a distinguished research proposal or a published or publishable article.

THE EUGENE LITWAK PRIZE IN SOCIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Awarded to a doctoral student in the Department for excellence in the preparation of a dissertation research proposal.

THE JACK ELINSON AWARD
Awarded to students in Sociomedical Sciences for published articles of outstanding merit.

MARISA DE CASTRO BENTON DISSERTATION AWARD IN SOCIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Given for a dissertation that makes an outstanding contribution to the sociomedical sciences and is worthy of special recognition.

THE SOCIOMEDICAL SCIENCES DISTINGUISHED MASTER’S THESIS AWARD
Awarded annually by the Department for distinguished scholarship and research in the student’s master thesis

THE SOCIAL INEQUALITIES RESEARCH AWARD
Awarded by the Center for the Study of Social Inequalities and Health to a student in Sociomedical Sciences and to a student in Epidemiology for excellence in master’s or doctoral research addressing health inequalities.

THE BERNARD CHALLENOR SPIRIT PRIZE
Awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated a commitment to building community, across department boundaries, at the Mailman School of Public Health.
