Mailman School Advances to the Top Three in Total NIH Funding

Amongst U.S. Schools of Public Health

The Mailman School of Public Health rose in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) rankings to capture third place in total NIH funding for all U.S. schools of public health. The recently released data for 2009 indicates that the School moved from fifth place in 2008 to the third place in 2009. Only the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Harvard School of Public Health rank ahead of the Mailman School.

Said Linda P. Fried, MD, MPH, dean and DeLamar Professor, “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate all who contributed to this achievement. The increased NIH funding underscores the competitive excellence of Mailman School research proposals and the recognition by NIH review panels that Mailman School researchers address critical challenges to the public’s health.”

The Research Resources Initiative (R2), created in December of 2008 by Dean Fried as part of the School’s strategic plan, bolstered the phenomenal school-wide effort.

Robyn Gershon, DrPH, associate dean of R2 and professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences, has collaborated with Rosa Rivera, associate dean for Grants & Contracts and assistant director of Sponsored Projects Administration, to work as a very strong team on improving research infrastructure and support for faculty.

To date, R2 has held 22 sessions with over 450 attendees, and three weekly writing workgroups have been developed. In addition, the initiative has served as funding announcements triage and over 40 faculty members have met with Dr. Gershon for individual grant preparation sessions, many have resulted in successful applications.
