New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo recently announced the launch of FAIR Health, Inc., a new not-for-profit company with a mandate to create an independent database for consumer healthcare reimbursement. FAIR Health and a research network headquartered at Syracuse University will also develop a new website where consumers – for the first time – have the opportunity to compare prices before they choose their doctors.
John Rowe, MD, professor of Health Policy and Management at the Mailman School, former Chairman and CEO of Aetna, Inc., and former President of Mount Sinai Medical Center, was asked to join the Board of FAIR Health. His extensive healthcare experience with both insurer and provider organizations adds a valuable perspective to FAIR Health’s Board.
FAIR Health arose out of an industry-wide investigation in 2008 which looked at allegations that health insurers were not keeping their promise to reimburse consumers based on the “usual and customary rate” of out-of-network care. Settlement money from that case will fund FAIR Health.
