The Office of Student Financial Aid at the Mailman School of Public Health was recently awarded $162,841 from the Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Part of the federal government’s stimulus funds targeting education, the award provides 3 years of financial assistance for the School’s Public Health Traineeship. The Traineeship affords financial support to students from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups who pursue academic programs that address occupational areas suffering from severe personnel shortages in the U.S., i.e. Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Environmental Health Sciences.
According to the School’s Financial Aid Director, Joe Korevec, this year’s award is “particularly beneficial to the School and students as a result of both its unusual timing and duration.” As a rule, the Traineeship funding is awarded for just a single year, with notification (upon approval by congress) generally coming in late spring or summer, well after the April 15th deposit deadline. This year’s award “maximizes the benefits to everyone,” says Korevec, “by making it available as a funding source earlier in the admissions/enrollment process, and by ensuring two additional years of funding.”
