Overview

Dr. Demmer has a general research interest in chronic disease risk factor epidemiology with specific focus on the interplay between the human microbiome and immuno-inflammatory phenotype as risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases. Dr. Demmer is involved in several collaborative projects domestically and internationally and is currently PI of an NIH funded cohort study: The Oral Infections Glucose Intolerance and Insulin Resistance Study (ORIGINS). The scientific aims of ORIGINS are to study the interplay between the subgingival microbiome and early risk for the development of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Demmer is co-PI of a project that is cataloguing Bloomberg era public health policy in New York City and evaluating the influence of the policy environment on chronic disease mortality and hospitalization rates. He also serves as co-investigator on several additional projects investigating novel risk factors and prediction models for cardiovascular disease, periodontal disease and congestive heart failure. Dr. Demmer teaches courses regarding applied epidemiological research methods and is co-director of the Epidemiology and Population Health Summer Institute at Columbia University (EPIC).
