ICAP Director Wafaa El-Sadr Participates in High-level United Nations Meeting on Scale-up of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV As part of a June 10-11 high-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, professor of clinical Epidemiology and director of the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs, moderated a discussion on country experiences and lessons learned in the scale-up of programs for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. The meeting, entitled "Accelerating Scale-Up of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV: Stories of Hope," was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS. It was held to discuss a recently released progress report, "Towards Universal Access," which noted increasing global and national political commitment to scale up of PMTCT programs between 2004 and 2007. Particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, the number of pregnant women receiving PMTCT prophylaxis increased substantially during the three-year period. During the meeting, participants considered critical elements for the successful scale up of national PMTCT programs and advised national leaders on future directions for program expansion. They also reaffirmed UN targets and goals for universal access to comprehensive services for women and children. Among the meeting's participants were First Lady of Zambia Maureen Mwanawasa, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot, Ukraine Minister of Health Vasily Knyazevich, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Thailand Siripon Kanshana, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation CEO Pamela Barnes, and Nafis Sadik and Lars O. Kallings, United Nations Secretary General Special Envoys on AIDS for Asia and Eastern Europe, respectively. At the recent HIV/AIDS Implementers' Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, Dr. El-Sadr presented ICAP's vision for PMTCT, including a re-conceptualization of PMTCT as a comprehensive program that provides prevention, care and treatment services to women and children.
