Required Data Security Training Courses for Mailman Faculty & Staff w/Technical Roles

As of January 1, 2012 the School requires faculty and staff with responsibility for data systems to complete coursework on data security. There are currently four different curricula depending on the person's role within the institution:

• Desktop Support Technician: Anyone who provides computer trouble-shooting support for staff and faculty either in a formal or informal capacity.
• System Owner: Faculty or staff who administratively owns the data system. For example, the Primary Investigator or team lead who authorized the creation of the data system, but has no hands-on operational role.
• System Custodian/Administrator/Application Custodian: Staff or faculty who operationally manage an application, system or sub-systems deployed to store and process information.
• Application Developer: Faculty or staff who write computer programs to address specific departmental data needs.

*People with dual roles must take all the coursework that applies.

Coursework Access
The courses leverage the University's Skills@Columbia site and are free to all. The courses take a couple of hours, and must be completed within a month of enrollment.
