For the past 10 years, genetic association studies have largely focused on common variants. Recent advances in genotyping and sequencing technology have allowed these studies to extend to rare variation and pose a variety of interesting challenges for study design and analysis. I will discuss efficient study design enabled by new genotyping and sequencing technologies. I will also discuss new methods for the analysis of the resulting data, with a particular focus on methods that allow rare variant association studies to reach very large sample sizes.
