The Columbia Summer Research Institute Hosts Open House for Prospective Participants

On Monday, February 7, the Columbia Summer Research Institute (CSRI), co-sponsored by the Mailman School of Public Health and the College of Physicians & Surgeons with the generous support of the RX Foundation, will host an Open House for all those interested in learning about its exceptional program.

The CSRI offers postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty the opportunity to gain fundamental skills in research methods via an intensive summer format. Of note, the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (Columbia's CTSA) is offering funding opportunities for qualified participants who are interested in comparative effectiveness research, for the 2011 session only; funding is also available for diverse scholars through the NHLBI-funded PRIDE program (more details below).

Open House

When: Monday, February 7, 2011 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Hess Commons (722 W 168th St., Lobby level)
RSVP: Please e-mail your RSVP to csri@columbia.edu

About the CSRI

During a five-week period (July 5th through August 9th, 2011), program participants will learn and apply the theory and methods behind the design and conduct of clinical and translational research studies, covering core knowledge in research design, epidemiology, and biostatistics, as well as health disparities research, decision analysis, and cost effectiveness analysis.

Through the CSRI, junior investigators from clinical and translational disciplines can earn ten academic course credits in a summer format convenient for working professionals, while experiencing the quality and rigor that characterize graduate training at Columbia University. Program graduates will gain basic skills in designing effective clinical and translational research studies, and will significantly enhance their competitive edge in the pursuit of independent grant funding. They also receive specialized training in grant-writing.

Funding Opportunities for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER)

Two funding opportunities are currently available in CER: CER-STAT and PRIDE.

CER-STAT (funded through the CTSA) is a one-time opportunity only offered for the Summer 2011 session. Selected scholars will be provided cost coverage for the 2011 CSRI program.

The PRIDE award (funded by a grant from NHLBI) provides rigorous training and mentoring opportunities to diverse junior faculty members. This 14-month program includes didactic training through the Columbia Summer Research Institute.

For more information on CER-STAT or PRIDE, please visit the CER website.
