Epidemiology

DrPh Degree in Epidemiology

Preparing professionals in biomedical and sociomedical fields for advanced careers as epidemiologists, this professional degree is generally suited for candidates with primary training in a related clinical field (i.e. medicine, nursing, dentistry, anthropology, psychology, sociology, or social work) who have already secured an MPH.

Research strengths, training, and faculty are in the following areas: cancer epidemiology, cardiovascular epidemiology, environmental epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, infectious disease epidemiology, epidemiologic methodology, neuroepidemiology, perinatal and reproductive epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and social epidemiology.

This degree is ideal for applicants seeking further doctoral level methodologic training in epidemiology to enhance research in the candidate’s substantive area of expertise. While the required coursework for the DrPH and PhD degree programs is similar, the applicant is required to take a qualifying exam in methodology but not the general exam which is subject specific. The DrPH degree is designed to be completed in a shorter period of time than the PhD (though students in full time employment may pursue the degree part time). Applicants without a prior clinical doctorate should apply to the PhD program.
