Environmental Health Sciences

PhD Degree in Environmental Health Sciences

The goal of the PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy) degree is to train our students to be independent thinkers who can critically evaluate data and create and carry out studies related to environmental health issues. The overall pedagogy of the program develops leaders with critical scientific skills in environmental science that can be applied to human health with the ultimate goal to take up independent careers in academia, industry and government. Our students achieve this through course work and independent research. Our goal is to train students not only in having skills to conduct the highest quality of research, but in addition, to learn how to communicate their knowledge to the scientific community and the larger lay community as well. While there are no specific requirements for PhD candidates, a strong background in biological sciences is desired. The PhD program only accepts full time students.

The PhD is conferred through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as are all PhDs on the Columbia University campus. Our PhD candidates have sought out both academic research careers as well as careers in government, business and education.
