It gives us great pleasure to announce the recipients of the 2011 Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence:

Drs. Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim


A husband and wife team and graduates of the class  of 1989, Drs. Abdool Karim are recognized for their exceptional  contributions to public health research and education. As special advisers  to the World Health Organization and UNAIDS, they have achieved what the  National Institutes of Health deemed a “significant milestone” in HIV Prevention with the breakthrough establishment of the first-ever microbicide to prevent HIV infection in women.

This award will be presented to Dr. Salim S. Abdool Karim and Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim at the third annual Alumni Summit for Public Health Leadership on June 16, 2011 at the Italian Academy on Columbia University’s Morningside campus.

About the Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence:
The Alumni Association established this award to recognize the outstanding achievements of Mailman School alumni. The award is presented annually to a Mailman School alumna/us who has made exceptional contributions to the School and/or exhibited distinguished leadership in the field of public health, such as in research, education, healthcare administration, public policy and practice.

The Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence is a testament to Dr. Allan Rosenfield’s legacy of leadership in public health, and to his integrity, courage and unwavering optimism. The Allan Rosenfield Award Nominating Committee, comprised of alumni and administrators of the School, reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the Dean who, in collaboration with the President of the Alumni Board, selects the recipient. The medal is presented at the Alumni Association’s Annual Alumni Summit.
