5:00PM - Obesity: A Complex Systems Problem
For the first time in history, future generations are facing the prospect of shorter life expectancies than their parents due to obesity-related diseases. Obesity is currently the second leading preventable cause of death in the United States, and according to the New York State Department of Health, it is threatening to soon surpass tobacco as the number one preventable killer. Our panel of top alumni and faculty experts will host a lively discussion examining the unique contributing factors to this epidemic from a wide range of perspectives and make recommendations on how public health leaders can stem the tide of this global threat.
Panelists:
6:30PM - Networking Reception
7:30PM - Dinner and Presentation of the Allan Rosenfield Alumni Award for Excellence to Dr. David Michaels, MPH '81, PhD '87, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Nominated to his post by President Obama in 2009 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Michaels is currently responsible for the workplace health and safety of over 130 million Americans. With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, Dr. Michaels has served as Assistant Secretary for two federal agencies with major public health mandates, collaborated with key policy makers and legislators, and established himself as a renowned public health figure carrying on the legacy of leadership set by the late Dean Allan Rosenfield.
