MPH Program for Students Entering By Fall 2011

Curriculum/Degree Requirements

(Note for Prospective Applicants: Students entering in Fall 2012 or later will be taking a restructured core curriculum and Certificate program. Please visit the Prospective Student website for more details on curricular offerings.)

MPH graduates of SMS complete 45 credit hours, a practicum, HIPAA, Good Clinical Practices Certification examination, and a Master’s thesis. (Unless otherwise noted, courses carry 3 credits.)

Mailman Core Requirements (15 credits)*

SMS Students are required to take the five School of Public Health core courses: Introduction to Sociomedical Sciences (P6700), Biostatistics (6103 or 6104), Principles of Epidemiology I (6400), Environmental Health Sciences (P6300), Issues and Approaches in Health Policy and Management (P6530).

SMS Core Requirements (15 credits)

In addition to completing the Mailman School core classes, SMS student must take three Department core courses (3 credits each) that provide an overview of the field of Sociomedical Sciences and the application of social sciences to public health. 

Students across all tracks are required to take 9 credits in each of the following areas: Theory (3), Methods (3), and Policy/Practice/Advocacy (3). (See approved courses)

Students are also permitted 3 credits for SMS elective and 3 credits for general elective. The balance of the required 45 will be applied toward track requirements.

Track Requirements (15 credits)*

While completing all of the above-referenced core courses, students must also meet track-specific requirements designed to enable students to develop expertise within their chosen program.
