The MPH degree in Sociomedical Sciences (SMS) is designed to train healthcare professionals in the application of theories and methods of social and behavioral sciences to address public health issues. Students are provided with the knowledge to understand the importance of social and behavioral sciences for the health of individuals and communities and the skills to apply this knowledge in the analysis and formulation of public health programs and policies.
Although the tracks may take disciplinary, professional, or topical approaches to public health, they are united by a focus on our signature themes. Two tracks (Social Science Research in Public Health, History and Ethics of Public Health) emphasize the methodological, theoretical, and disciplinary research tradition of the social sciences. Five tracks (Health Promotion, Aging and Public Health, Global Health, Sexuality and Health, Urbanism and the Built Environment) target specific populations or spheres of particular public health concern for analysis and intervention. These tracks emphasize program design, implementation, and evaluation.
The tracks offered to students entering by Fall 2011:
The School recently launched a full review of the MPH program, consulting with students, alumni, potential employers, and our faculty. This led to the launch of our restructured 2-year Columbia MPH program and a new one-year Accelerated MPH program—both debuting in 2012. The new programs offer integrated interdisciplinary school-wide curriculums.
Students in the 2-year Columbia MPH program will also select and apply to one of the Certificate programs which provide a secondary focus in addition to students’ departmental expertise. With more than 20 options, applicants can apply for programs such as: Health of an Aging Society; Health Promotion, Research, and Practice; Global Health; and Sexuality, Sexual, and Reproductive Health.
