Confronting Non-Communicable Diseases in the Middle East and Turkey: A Regional Conference
On January 19-20, 2014, ICAP Columbia, the Global Health Initiative and the Institute of Human Nutrition hosted a regional conference on the growing threat of non-communicable diseases in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Entitled “Confronting Non-Communicable Diseases in the Middle East and Turkey,” the two-day meeting took place at the Columbia Global Center: Middle East in Amman, Jordan, convening regional experts from Jordan, Turkey, Syria, and Palestine.
Chronic NCDs are the leading cause of death and disability in the Middle East and Turkey, and are the focus of a new project funded by the Columbia University President’s Global Innovation Fund and led by Dr. Miriam Rabkin, Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr and Dr. Richard Deckelbaum. This two-year initiative seeks to foster research partnerships, faculty collaboration and student engagement in the region. On January 19th, CU faculty met with 30 regional experts to identify NCD-related research priorities and training needs. On January 20th, a larger conference drew more than 75 participants, for a day of panels, presentations and vibrant discussions about how to confront the growing threat of NCDs.
