The fields for which the Department prepares its students are challenging. Successful applicants are those who have determined their professional focus and the important role the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health can play in advancing that goal.
The Department seeks academically strong applicants with at least two years of post-college work experience in public health capacities.
Examples of successful applicants’ previous work experience follow:
| Academy for Educational Development | Program Manager |
| Americorps | Teen Pregnancy Prevention Teacher |
| Global Health Partners | Director, International Services |
| High School | Sexual Health Educator, Obesity Prevention Specialist |
| Human Rights Watch | Research Coordinator |
| Lance Armstrong Foundation | Communications Manager |
| Lutheran World Services | Refugee Case Management |
| Metro Teen AIDS | HIV Education and Outreach Specialist |
| National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health | Community Mobilizer |
| New York University | Program Officer for Asthma Education |
| Peace Corps | HIV/Health Educator, HIV testing program, Community Health Mobilizer |
| Planned Parenthood | Health Care Assistant, Clinic Supervisor, LGBTQ services |

| Teach for America | Science Teacher, Future Health Professionals Club leader |

The Department also attracts physicians and clinicians who serve women, men, and adolescent and pediatric populations.
Individuals who demonstrate exceptional backgrounds in every other way, but lack two full years’ of public health experience, may apply. Depending on the overall strength of the applicant pool, they may be accepted.
The Department almost never accepts students who complete their undergraduate degrees in the spring immediately prior to fall matriculation.
