April 2011
Dear Population and Family Health Student:
Congratulations on your acceptance to the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health. We hope that your preparations to begin your Master of Public Health are going smoothly. We look forward to meeting you in person at the end of August.
In July, you will find new materials prepared for your cohort posted on the Departmental website in the “Current Students” section of each track’s web page, including the specific courses for which you should register. If you have concerns about any other matter pertaining to your academic program, you are welcome to contact Robin Mangini by phone or email.
ORIENTATION AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The Mailman School of Public Health orientation will take place from Monday, August 29 to Friday, September 2. If you have not yet viewed the orientation schedule on the Office of Student Affairs web site, please do so soon.
The Department’s REQUIRED Orientation will take place on Monday, August 29, with Track break-out sessions following on the same day. (The exact locations will be available on the first day of Orientation.) At these sessions, faculty, staff, and current students will describe program requirements, review registration procedures, address course selection for Fall 2011, and provide recommendations about how to plan your academic program. You will also receive the name of your faculty advisor.
DUAL-DEGREE STUDENTS
If you are a dual-degree student, you must register through Mailman this fall. Contact Robin Mangini at your earliest convenience; your academic and residency requirements must be planned carefully at both schools. If possible, attend orientations at both schools.
NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
With the visa information supplied to you by Columbia University’s International Student Services Office, you should receive details about the International Student Orientation in August. If you do not, contact them directly at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/isso/isso.html. Please feel free to stop in and say hello anytime after you arrive.
NOTE TO GLOBAL HEALTH STUDENTS
Some Global Health track students find it helpful to begin their studies during the first summer session (which starts on May 23, 2011) because it frees space in their single Fall semester for elective courses. If an early start is an option for you, please email Robin Mangini.
Once again, we look forward to meeting you during orientation and registration. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Robin Mangini (at 212-304-5261).
Sincerely,
John Santelli, MD, MPH
