Dr Therese McGinn DrPH MPH

The 2010 Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) named Dr. Therese McGinn one of five Mailman School faculty members to its fifth class of Fellows. Founded in 2005 to promote quality education and provide incentives for teaching, the Academy selects Fellows from all four schools at CUMC for their innovative classroom techniques and commitment to maintaining the highest standards in teaching.

Therese McGinn, DrPH, MPH, Associate Professor of Clinical Population and Family Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, is principal investigator for the Reproductive Health Access, Information and Services in Emergencies (RAISE) Initiative which serves the needs of those affected by conflict and natural disaster. Previously and also at the Mailman School, she served as deputy director of the Averting Maternal Death and Disability Program (AMDD) and as principal investigator of the Monitoring and Evaluation Program of the Reproductive Health Response in Conflict Consortium. During her more than 25 years of public health work in resource-poor settings globally, Dr. McGinn has focused on using sound data collection and analysis to improve the scope and quality of reproductive health services, in order for men and women to make important choices about their sexual and reproductive lives. She has worked most extensively in Africa, and also in Latin America, Central Asia and Southeast Asia. In addition to her applied research activities globally and teaching responsibilities, Dr. McGinn participates in professional conferences and contributes to professional literature.

The Glenda Garvey Award

The desire to enhance the teaching environment and support the teaching mission of the faculty at Columbia University led to the development of the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy. Dr. Garvey earned numerous accolades for teaching throughout her career at Columbia University Medical Center. Embodying the traits of the ideal educator, she was a recognized expert in a body of knowledge who was dedicated to her students throughout their careers, and an effective communicator in transmitting concepts, facts, and her own enthusiasm for learning.
