During my college years at Queen’s University in Canada I volunteered at a local hospital where I was introduced to public health. Wanting to learn more about the influence of policymaking on a population’s health, in fall 2008 I enrolled in the Health Policy Track at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Without a doubt, the strengths of the School’s Department of Health Policy and Management are the exceptional faculty and diverse student body. Not only are our professors some of the leading thinkers in their respective fields, but they are especially adept at balancing academic theory with current real-world applications.
Our small class sizes help facilitate in-depth discussions where students enrich the classroom dialogue with multiple perspectives and experiences from working in public health. Living as a student in New York City has been an amazing experience. There is never a shortage of exciting conferences or lectures to attend, and the city is home to some of the top hospitals, research centers, and healthcare organizations. I am looking forward to my summer practicum at the New York City Human Resources Administration’s Office of Citywide Health Insurance Access.
