HPM Faculty in the News
Dr. John W. Rowe, MD, a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, was recently featured in The Washington Post. The article, “Case in Point: To go from worst to first, alter the business model,” profiled Dr. Rowe’s successful tenure as CEO and chairman of Aetna, Inc. By leading the re-design of the insurance company's business model from the ground up to reflect an emphasis on quality care, Dr. Rowe engaged employees and improved services for both physicians and patients. The “lesson” as Moriarity and Freeman note is, “Sometimes you have to change the business model to change the story of an enterprise. Transformational leaders energize others to become part of a new story”.

Within the Health Policy and Management Department, this year Dr. Rowe co-taught "Transforming the Delivery of Healthcare Services" with Linda Green of the Graduate School of Business. He also teaches the “Private Health Insurance and Public Policy” course with HPM faculty. “The seminar,” he explains, “provides students with the full thickness of understanding through multiple lenses of current and likely future interaction of private health insurers and public policy in America.” To this end, students study the history and trends of taxation and regulation, pricing and underwriting, pharmacy benefits management, Medicare, drug benefits, managed care, public policy issues, and innovations in private insurance. Guest speakers also supplement the curriculum and add depth to individual debates.
Dr. Rowe is a member of the Rockefeller Foundation’s board, and is the former president and CEO of Mount Sinai NYU Health and the former chairman and CEO of Aetna, Inc. His faculty profile may be viewed here
