Completion of Training

Prior to Leaving Columbia University

Completion of training in research integrity.  The National Cancer Institute, NIH, requires trainees to demonstrate compliance with guidelines regarding Responsible Conduct in Research. They may do so by completing an on-line training program on the NIH site, here.

Obligations on Return to South Africa

  1. Completion of questionnaires and privacy forms that we will send you toward the end of your traineeship and annually.  The questions will cover demographic factors, your training, your professional experience, and you professional accomplishments.  Your answers will be transferred to a database, and summary data will be reported to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other outlets.
  2. Registration of any publications based on your studies during this traineeship with PubMed Central on the NIH website.
  3. Appropriate acknowledgement of the funding source of your traineeship on any scientific publications or presentations emanating from this traineeship as follows: [your name] was supported by the Columbia University – South Africa Training Program for Research on AIDS-related Malignancies through the National Cancer Institute, NIH (grant # 1D43CA153715-01).
  4. Submission of a written report on your training experience within a month after completion of your training.  You should have a cover page indicating the dates of training, site of training, mentors’ names, 1-2 pages of text, and any tables and figures you think may be relevant. 

If you fail to comply with the above requirements you will be required to return part of your stipend. 

Continuing Support for Trainees

Following the initial traineeship award, trainees may apply to us for start-up research funds.  We will also be available to provide technical support and collaborative assistance for writing grant applications and protocols, reviewing manuscripts, and identifying potential sources of funding.
