Program Description

The emphasis of this program is on building long-term scientific capacity in southern Africa. Exceptional trainees are identified at a critical point in their careers, when the program’s training will enable them to develop their research skills and knowledge. It is expected that they will return to South Africa or the other participating countries to positions that will further their career development in research and enable them to make critical contributions in the response to the HIV/TB epidemics.

The primary focus of the program is a long or short-term training period in the U.S. Depending on current priorities, scientific contributions, and availability of funds, the trainees may subsequently have ongoing access to resources in terms of additional training, mentoring, technical assistance, and collaboration.

The program is particularly geared to support individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Potential long-term trainees should hold at least a doctoral degree to be eligible for a traineeship. It is preferred that potential applicants have started a research career in TB and/or HIV as evidenced by at least one publication and should already be working with established local HIV/AIDS / TB researchers or on already funded projects.

Types of Training

  1. One to three years of U.S.-based postdoctoral training leading to a master’s or doctoral degree for qualified applicants who are residents of southern African countries with previous research experience.
  2. Three to six month training visits to the U.S. to learn specific basic science techniques, skills, or procedures related to HIV or TB research and prevention.
  3. Short courses and workshops in southern Africa involving both South African and U.S. faculty.
