Completion of Training

Prior to Leaving Columbia University

Trainees must complete the NIH termination report, evaluation questionnaires, and an exit interview with the training coordinator at the completion of training and prior to departure from Columbia University.

Trainees must return their CU ID, keys, and bookstore card to Ms. Sengupta. CU apartment keys should be returned to CU housing office and departure from off-campus housing should be coordinated with the building superintendent/landlord. Personal mail should not be redirected to the departmental address.

Other institutions: Trainees at institutions other than Columbia should follow the requirements of those institutions.

Obligations on Return to South Africa

  • Trainees must return to southern Africa for a period equal to the period of the Traineeship.
  • Trainees are encouraged to acknowledge their CU-SA Fogarty AITRP traineeship in their publications.
    • Suggested wording: XX received a CU-SA Fogarty AITRP traineeship through grant number 5 D43 TW00231 funded by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health.

Annual Updates

Trainees are encouraged to submit annual reports to program administrators that include the following:

  • Changes in contact details
  • Scientific publications
  • Conference attendance and presentations
  • Keynote address at conferences
  • Leadership positions
  • Appointments to committees
  • Teaching and supervision
  • Research grants received
  • Research awards, accolades or promotion
  • Other relevant information, as required by the Fogarty International Center

Ongoing Support for Trainees

Following the initial traineeship award, trainees can apply for any of the following:

  • Further training
  • Start-up research funds
  • Technical support for writing protocols, reviewing manuscripts, identifying potential sources of funding, and potential collaborator

In addition trainees may receive invitations to local courses, seminars, and workshops
