Service Activities

Cancer epidemiology faculty lead several service programs. Examples of their work include:

  • A long standing free colon cancer screening program, sponsored through the New York State Department of Health, serving uninsured and underinsured populations in Manhattan and the Bronx;
  • Outreach to the Washington Heights/Harlem communities with programs that educate the public on clinical trials and prevention studies;
  • Faculty leadership in the area of academic detailing - the use of educators to visit physicians’ offices to update and educate them regarding the latest information on cancer prevention and screening; and
  • A large community program currently underway with Long Island University in Brooklyn, to explore the large and diverse Afro-Caribbean immigrant community in Brooklyn with regard to their cancer screening and prevention practices.
