Faculty Profile

Dr. Denis Nash, Surveillance Star

After a post-doc in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducting outbreak investigations and disease surveillance, Denis Nash, PhD, associate professor of Epidemiology, directed the HIV/ AIDS Surveillance Unit at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH).

Having joined the Columbia faculty in 2004, Dr. Nash brings his applied public health experience to the Department's Public Health Surveillance course. The class focuses on the methods and approaches that public health agencies use to monitor the health of their communities. Public health surveillance provides a factual basis from which agencies can appropriately set priorities, plan programs, and take actions to promote and protect the public’s health.

Dr. Nash also works in the Mailman School's International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), where he directs ICAP's Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Unit and conducts operations research on the scale-up of HIV-related service delivery in sub-Saharan Africa.
