Practicum

Environmental and Molecular Epidemiology,
Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, and
Medical/Health Physics

In order to graduate, all EHS students must fulfill a practicum/internship requirement. Information gained during the experience must be documented in a Practicum Form (PDF) and submitted the Office of Student Affairs. A copy must be given to the Academic Program Manager. Practica may be taken during the summer or during a semester, or spread out over multiple semesters, as long as long as the program entails at least 150-300 hours of work experience as per the Mailman School of Public Health requirement.

Fulfilling the Requirement

Students may satisfy the practicum requirement in one of two ways, both of which need to be formally approved by the student’s advisor and/or the Academic Program Manager:

a) They may fulfill the practicum requirement on the basis of current work experience (this typically occurs with our part-time students who are full-time employees). The experience may take a variety of forms, depending on the student’s area of interest, and might include: participation in an ongoing research or evaluation project that could be laboratory or fieldwork-based; work with a government agency, a community-based organization or a corporation; or designing and conducting an independent study.

b) They may fulfill the practicum on the basis of concurrent experience during a semester. This typically occurs the summer between the first and second year. As above, the experience may take a variety of forms, depending on the student’s area of interest: participation in an ongoing research or evaluation project that could be laboratory or fieldwork-based; working with a government agency, a community-based organization or a corporation; or designing and conducting an independent study. The practicum must include at least 150 – 300 hours of work experience.
