DrPH Program

Track/Course Requirements

Students are eligible to take their Qualifying Examination only after successfully completing 30 course credits, in addition to any required course credits required to obtain the MPH degree or its equivalent. ("Equivalent" is normally defined as a master’s degree in any appropriate subject plus completion of or waivers for the five core courses (15 credits) offered by the Mailman School of Public Health.) The five core courses are: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy and Management, Sociomedical Sciences and Environmental Sciences. Specific course requirements for the Molecular Epidemiology Track or the Molecular Toxicology Track follow.

Full-time DrPH students are expected to complete their course work in the first year. After the first year, students must maintain continuous enrollment status. All students are expected to enroll in Journal Club every semester while in the program, except for the final semester, when they are writing their thesis. Part-time DrPH students are expected to take their courses in a timely fashion. Whether full time or part time, students are expected to complete the program within 7 years.

Upon admission to the program, students meet with the Director of Educational Affairs and the Academic Program Manager. These two support resources will provide information and recommendations regarding course work, qualifying examinations, and other academic issues during the student’s first years in the program and beyond.
