Adria Armbrister is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences (concentration Sociology). She is also the Program Coordinator for the Global Health Track at the Mailman School of Public Health. Ms. Armbrister’s dissertation research will focus on rheumatologists’ discriminatory beliefs and whether these affect treatment decisions for black women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Her work will examine how any differences in treatment decisions between whites and blacks vary with a country’s historical racial hierarchy. She therefore will be examining this question in the United States, Brazil and South Africa. Her research interests also include health disparities with regard to autoimmune disease; the influence of vegetarian diet on alleviating health disparities; and immigrant health.
