Current faculty research projects and awards include the following:

  • Four people affiliated with the Center received grant funding from the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health to complete research on critical issues in public health history. These recipients include:
    • Amy Fairchild for her work on the ethics and politics of the regulation of research.
    • Barron Lerner for his history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), and
    • David Rosner and Marion Moser Jones for their project titled "Sidewalk Asylums: The History of Homelessness in Modern America."
  • David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz were awarded a National Science Foundation grant for their research on low-level exposures and environmental politics.
  • James Colgrove received funding to complete a major history of New York City’s Department of Health. Dr. Colgrove is the lead author on a number of papers in progress, including a recently submitted piece on public health infrastructure. Along with Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner, he also edited The Contested Boundaries of American Public Health, published in fall, 2008 by Rutgers University Press.
  • The Center's research frequently includes a host of international health issues. For example, Ron Bayer is currently studying harm reduction policies in Vietnam and working with the World Health Organization examining the ethics of tuberculosis control. Additionally, David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz are involved in an international consortium studying occupational health.
