Exceptional Students

Ivy Chen

Ivy Chen carries a full load as a MPH student, teaching assistant and research assistant. Her work in the classroom has garnered the attention of the University, though not for her coursework. Rather, Chen has been recognized for her stellar work as a teaching assistant in the core course Introduction to Biostatistics.

In 2008, University President Lee Bollinger awarded Chen the prestigious Presidential Teaching Award noting that her ability to present material in understandable terms shows Mailman School students how to apply abstract biostatistical concepts to real-world problems.

Established in 1996, the presidential awards honor the best of Columbia's teachers for the influence they have on the development of their students and their part in maintaining the University's longstanding reputation for educational excellence.

Chen credits Martina Pavilcova, PhD, assistant professor of Biostatistics and course instructor for Introduction to Biostatistics, for teaching Chen how to create questions that push students to think critically and not just plug-in formulas to get an easy answer.

In addition to her coursework as a student and teaching, Chen also works with Melissa Begg, ScD, professor of clinical Biostatistics, and associate dean for Interdisciplinary Programs, on a new program of interdisciplinary short-term courses.
