Applications will be reviewed and ranked by a committee of three faculty members. One member will be nominated by the Dean, one by the Policy Advisory Committee and one by the Steering Committee. Members of the applicant’s Department must recuse themselves when that applicant’s proposal is under discussion.

The written opinion of outside experts may be solicited when the committee considers it helpful to do so.

Criteria to be evaluated by the judges:

  1. The scientific merit of the proposed research.
  2. The public health significance of the proposed research.
  3. The likely impact of the award on the research career of the applicant. Pilot projects and support for preliminary work may be submitted, especially in the case of newly appointed faculty.
